Starting your tile search
Whether you’re looking for wall or floor tiles, for your main bathroom, kitchen or ensuite, it can be tricky to know where to start with your tile search. Here’s some simple steps to help you find the best tile solution for your next home design project:
1. Find tile inspiration
Start by defining the look you want to achieve. We recommend first exploring what others have done, in order to work out what you do and don’t like! Pinterest and Instagram are always great sources of design inspiration - use these to discover the latest trends and spot new ideas that you might not have otherwise considered!
Top tip: Head over to our Instagram account for instant design inspiration. Check out the fantastic interior schemes others have created using our tiles, using our hashtag #ShowAndTile!
2. Think about the bigger picture
When choosing your tiles, it’s really important to think about how the tile installation will look alongside other fittings and fixtures in the room. The floor and wall decor, in particular, should be complementary to create a seamless finish. Think of your floor and wall tiles as being the Yin to the Yang.
Colour is also key. Clashing colour palettes and patterns can make striking features, but it’s important to find balance, to avoid making the design too busy or overbearing. Think of the character you want to create for the room and choose your colours accordingly. To make things easier, we’ve created a Colour Genie tool that allows you to upload an image and then automatically finds the tiles to complement it from our comprehensive product portfolio!
Johnson Tiles recommends:
If you want to play it safe, we recommend partnering neutral floor tiles, such as our Antique wooden-effect collection, with ceramic wall tiles. See our Stonework range, to create a simple pared-back design. If you’re going for a more adventurous look, however, our glazed porcelain wall and floor tiles, like the Devonshire range, are the perfect solution to create a more statement scheme.
3. Make a calculated plan...
As with all design projects, planning is paramount. Start by deciding on your budget. Then you can narrow down your options and avoid wasting time browsing tile products that are out of your price limit. To do this, you need to work out the dimensions of the area you want to tile. Tiles are predominantly sold in mm, so by knowing approximately how big the room is, you can calculate how many tiles you need to source and, therefore, the maximum price per tile that you can allow.
